Different Types of Headstone Finishes
Headstones can undergo various finishing techniques to achieve different textures and appearances. Although standard polishing remains the most popular finish, many customers prefer alternative options for a unique look. Therefore, we offer a variety of finishes to cater to different preferences.
Honed
/ Matte Finish
A honed finish removes the high gloss of a polished surface, creating a smooth yet non-reflective texture. As a result, the headstone retains an elegant and subtle appearance. Moreover, this finish enhances scratch resistance, making it a durable option for memorials.
Leather Finish
Skilled artisans carefully texture the stone to create a leathered effect, giving headstones a natural, antique appearance. Furthermore, small nooks and crannies form during this process, producing a unique worn look. The final texture depends on the stone type and color, ensuring that every piece has a distinct character.
Sandblasted Finish
Sandblasting uses fine abrasive material to create a rough surface texture. Depending on the desired effect, we apply either light or deep sandblasting. In addition, this process improves resistance to environmental factors, ensuring the headstone remains blemish-free for decades.
Flamed Finish
A high-temperature flame alters the stone’s surface, resulting in a faded, non-smooth texture with slight color variations due to mineral reactions. On the other hand, Irish customers rarely request flamed headstones. However, we occasionally fulfill custom orders for this finish.
Brushed Finish
Using metal rotary brushes, we gently brush the surface to remove softer particles, creating a bumpy, antique texture. Despite its rugged look, a brushed finish maintains a fairly smooth feel when touched. Consequently, it remains a popular choice for those seeking a weathered yet refined look.
Bush hammered Finish
Bush hammering involves striking the stone with a mechanical or handheld hammer, creating small craters and pits on the surface. Because this process requires manual effort, bush hammering costs slightly more than flamed or waterjet finishes. However, granite’s durability ensures that it withstands intense hammering without damage.
Chiseled Finish
One of the oldest finishing methods, chiseling gives the headstone a rough, textured surface. Skilled craftsmen use chisels to carefully carve and chip the stone, resulting in a classic and timeless look. As a result, this finish remains popular for those wanting a traditional aesthetic.
